Welcome...

I am Dr Neil Stanley, an independent freelance sleep expert This is my personal website, any opinions expressed are my own. NEW BOOK! A Sleep Divorce: How to Sleep Apart, Not Fall Apart. Having been advocating sleeping in separate beds for the last 20 years or so, long before it became fashionable to do so, it was about time I, along with my wonderful co-author Jennifer Adams wrote a book about it. This book will help couples understand: • why sleep is so important • how they can work together to manage their sleeping arrangements • and if they want to, only divorce where they sleep at night, not each other Available now from Amazon UK here US here and all good book retailers. In 1982 I started my career at the Neurosciences Division of the R.A.F. Institute of Aviation Medicine. I moved to the Human Psychopharmacology Research Unit (HPRU), part of the University of Surrey, in 1993 where as Director of Sleep Research, I created and ran a 24 bed sleep laboratory designed for clinical trials. Since 2009 I have been freelance and now spend most of my time travelling the UK and abroad lecturing on various aspects of sleep to healthcare professionals, companies and members of the public. see here I have published 40 peer-review papers on various aspects of sleep research and psychopharmacology. see here In 2004 I received my PhD from the University of Surrey on the basis of my published works. Therefore I am not a medic, I am a proper Doctor. I don’t claim to be a medic, don’t want to be a medic, never wanted to be a medic and have never called myself a medic. Anyone who thus confuses me with being a medic, is frankly an idiot I am widely quoted by the UK and international media as a sleep expert. see here Professional Membership: European Sleep Research Society American Academy of Sleep Medicine British Sleep Society o Chairman 2000-2004, o Committee member 1998-2000 World Sleep Society European Society of Sleep Technologists. In addition to setting up a clinical sleep service at the HPRU, I was also involved, on a freelance basis, in the setting up and development of the sleep service at The London Clinic. I have also worked in the clinical sleep laboratories at ScanSleep, Copenhagen and the Lovisenberg Hospital, Oslo Since 2016 I have had academic and scientific oversight of the Leeds Sleep Evaluation Questionnaire (LSEQ) developed by Professor Ian Hindmarch. For further details of the LSEQ see here I was a member of the Executive Committee of the Assembly of National Sleep societies (2004 to 2009) and through that I am co-author of the Guidelines for Accreditation of Sleep Medicine Centres 1 ; Guidelines for Sleep Medicine Education in Europe 2 and Standard procedures for Adult Sleep Medicine 3 Employment 2004 - date Freelance independent sleep expert 2016 - 2018 Sleep Physiologist, Lovisenberg Hospital, Oslo, Norway 2006 - 2009 Manager, Clinical Research and Trials Unit, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital 1999 - 2006 Director of Sleep Research, HPRU Medical Research Centre, University of Surrey 1998 - 1999 Deputy Head of HPRU 1997 - 1999 Research Director 1993 - 1999 Senior Electrophysiologist Human Psychopharmacology Research Unit University of Surrey 1992 - 1993 Physiology Technician, School of Biological Sciences, University of Surrey 1992 - 1993 Freelance sleep technician. 1982 - 1991 Scientific Officer, Neuroscience Division, Royal Air Force Institute of Aviation Medicine NB What I am not Esse quam videri I am not a ‘sleep advocate’, ‘sleep diplomat’, ‘sleep practitioner’, ‘sleep educator’, ‘sleep evangelist’, ‘sleep therapist’, ‘sleep physiologist’, ‘sleep czar’, ‘sleep environment analyst’, ‘sleep fairy’, ‘sleep guru’, ‘sleep geek’, ‘sleep solution expert’, ‘sleep ambassador’, ‘sleep health navigator’, sleep solution expert’, ‘sleep fixer’, ‘International sleep speaker and educator’, ‘sleep enthusiast’, ‘sleep detective’, ‘Austarlia’s leading sleep expert’ or any other fancy title. I am an independent sleep expert, plain and simple, because I am an expert on sleep, nothing more, nothing less. I don’t need a fancy title; my expertise, knowledge and experience provide ample testimony to my being a sleep expert. I am ‘independent’ because I have no affiliation with any institution. All these pretentious, usually self-given, titles are nonsense. The more pretentious the title the less expert the person is almost certainly going to be about sleep. So if you want someone with a fancy title then there are plenty of them out there but if you want an expert in sleep then contact me PS you will notice that my website is not the most professional this is because I made it myself, yes I know it shows! As mentioned I am a sleep expert, not a web designer, so again if you want someone with a flashy, all singing, all dancing, website then there are plenty of them out there but if you want someone who knows about sleep then contact me (however please do not contact me with an offer of a web design job as I’m pretty certain I’m not your man).
